Scientific and
Forensic Tests

The authentication of a work of art relies on valuable evaluation tools. Kahlo Experts does not only know of these tools, but implements them while completing studies, analysis, and research to certify a work.

Generally, two types of tests are used: scientific and forensic.

Scientific tests allow an examination of all the contents of a painting, including the chemical composition, age of the canvas or panel, chemical structure of the paint used, and ingredients utilized to bind the painting. We turn to UV, X-ray, and infrared photos, DNA testing, or pigment analysis. We can even examine its dating through carbon-14 testing.

Forensic investigation takes into account all the existing documentation about a work: digital fingerprints on the painting, the labels, marks, or writings on the back or the front, the signature if it has one, the date the canvas or support panel was manufactured, as well as the type of paint, brushes, or varnishes used. This research can determine the age, origin, composition, and materials of a work of art.

Scientific and forensic tests along with Morellian Analysis, which deals with the stylistic details of the work, allow an exact evaluation of the authenticity of the work and knowledge of which studio or painter it can be attributed to.
